THE STORY BEHIND
YELLOW ROSE PETALS
Yellow Rose Petals brings together poems Mike D Poet wrote and performed over several years, now brought to life through music alongside producer Neezy Beats.
The project draws from his personal experiences with love, relationships, commitment, and the ups and downs that come with them.
At the heart of the project is his relationship with his wife, ShellzWithAZ, a fellow recording artist who inspired much of his writing. During the creation of the project, Shellz was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, a moment that would change their lives forever.
Yellow Rose Petals is dedicated to her, their journey, and her survivorship.

01 —HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Mike D Poet and ShellzWithAZ first met when Mike was hired as an actor to appear in one of her music videos, “Chop.”
What started as a professional opportunity eventually grew into a relationship that, through its ups and downs, would inspire much of his poetry.

02 —THROUGH IT ALL
When Shellz was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, they had recently opened their salon, Locs By Us. Despite the diagnosis, they continued building the business together, with Mike stepping into the role of co-owner.
During that time, Mike wrote “1000x,” a poem about choosing the person you love, no matter what life brings.
Throughout her treatment, Mike remained by her side, accompanying her to hospital visits and chemotherapy sessions. Although Shellz was unable to perform during that time, she continued supporting Mike, showing up for his performances whenever she could.

03 —A FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT
THE PROPOSAL ON CAMERA
When it came time to film the music video for “1000x,” Mike reunited with director Magenta Haze, who had directed “Chop,” the music video where he and Shellz first met.
They filmed at Locs By Us, where Mike surprised Shellz by proposing to her on camera.

04 —THEIR STORY CONTINUES
After 14 rounds of chemotherapy, a mastectomy, 30 rounds of radiation, and an additional 16 rounds of chemotherapy, Shellz is now cancer-free.
She is now on the road to recovery — focusing on healing, recording music, and living in gratitude, while she and Mike continue to grow Locs By Us, where they lead a team of more than 10 stylists.
Their love story has also been featured by Dana-Farber.
